Cylons Created By Man

In a lighter note, has anyone been watching the new Battlestar Galactica on the Sci-Fi channel?

Long story short - the series already aired in Europe. My friend Tim — who lives in California — downloaded the episodes, burned them to disc, and mailed them to me. Currently, I’m four episodes ahead of the US air schedule.

The show is very well written, which is usually one of the trademarks of the half-season format that most cable outlets favor - only having to write thirteen episodes (as opposed to twenty-two for network television seasons) usually allows for a higher quality of writing, as the writing staff generally isn’t trying to think up a crap “b” plot to fill out an episode.

I said “well written.” Yes, and indeed, one of the episodes I had actually seen before. Except this time it was titled Litmus, and the last time it was titled The Drumhead.

Litmus is still a good episode - don’t get me wrong - I just had a hard time not picturing Edward James Olmos as Patrick Stewart and Master at Arms Hadrian as Admiral Satie.

Litmus airs in the US a week from Friday. Be warned.

There used to be a time when I would stay up until three or four in the morning, doing not a whole lot of productive tasks. I would get — if I was lucky — six hours of sleep before having to wake up to go to work. For the last few months, I’ve been getting to sleep rarely much past midnight, and when I wake up, I’m able to get stuff done before heading off to work.

So here it is, one thirty in the a.m., and I’m still up, and I’m cranky.

I listened to President Bush’s State of the Union tonight on the radio at work. The first thing that got my attention was this statement: “For the good of families, children and society, I support a constitutional amendment to protect the institution of marriage.

Okay, first off, I thought Bush backed off his support for that amendment just prior to the election. So doesn’t this make him the flip-flopper he portrayed Kerry to be? “I supported the amendment after I didn’t support it after I supported it originally.” Sheesh.

But that’s not really the thing that ticked me off. I think it is sad that the Republican Party feels it needs to pander to the Religious Right to such a degree that it threatens the basic, “god-given” and Constitutionally assured rights that all American citizens — in a perfect world would — enjoy. Anyway, notice this bit:

“Because one of the deepest values of our country is compassion, we must never turn away from any citizen who feels isolated from the opportunities of America.”

Like the opportunity - nay, the freedom - to be with the person they love in marriage. Oh, unless they’re gay. Or a polygomist.

Following this attack on citzens’ rights, Bush follows it up with this laughable bit: “Americans recognize that spirit of liberty, because we share it. In any nation, casting your vote is an act of civic responsibility.

What hogwash. One paragraph he’s talking about amending the Constitution to ensure that gays will never enjoy the liberties to which they are entitled - namely, the same legal protections offered to heterosexual couples bound in marriage. And then in the next, he’s all “We love freedom, when it’s our freedom and not their freedom.”

Nothing more to really say, is there?
