It was pointed out to me that the UPS position might be part of their “ramp up to the holiday” hiring binge. This would be bad because, great, gainful employment until January — then, ick. I’m also trying to figure out how their pay works … is it just a flat hourly rate? Is there compensation per package? Because, really, $11.50 an hour? I’d have to work like eighty a week to make what I (roughly) do now. So, yeah, no thanks.
Scary Post Guy was in today. Apparently the part-time guys work a lot more hours than the full-time guys, but don’t get benefits, or, uh, days off. He assured me that the openings would be posted soon, so, we shall see. Again, the Postal Service is the preferable employer.
I was thinking about applying for the exam with the Gaithersburg regional post office. Yeah, I don’t know exactly where Gaithersburg is except that it’s in Montgomery County near Rockville (I think?) but, this got me thinking — admittedly, something I’d been thinking of when contemplating working for UPS Burtonsville — but why am I scared of moving out of the northern Baltimore County area? What do I really have holding me to the Timonium/Hunt Valley area?
Not much, really. So I think I’m going to approach the job search from the perspective of, “It’ll be a hell of a commute, but I can always terminate my lease and move.”
UPDATE:
I went ahead and applied for the exam with Gathersburg. They’re going to mail me testing materials and the date of the exam, and then I have to score 70% or higher to pass the exam and continue with the hiring process.
