After a discussion with the knowledgeable Molly Goatwax at Molly’s Pub, I’ve pretty much reached the conclusion that while I would very much like to buy a house, and would like to buy a house in Remington, and might like to buy Gary’s grandad’s house in Remington even if it does need work, that I’m just not at a point where purchasing one makes much sense — I don’t have enough money, and while my credit score is a lot better than it was last spring when I first started thinking about this, a bigger hurdle is how little I make (or rather, how little I report making).

Essentially, the only way we could figure I could buy the place was if Merf took on the title himself, paid closing costs himself, and then after a year of paying interest to him, I would refinance and the bank would get the title. That’s the short version, and thankfully Molly wrote it down for me or I wouldn’t have been able to keep it even that straight.

Alternatively, I could wait a few years, when hopefully my financial situation has improved, and buy a house in the same neighborhood with little or no work required to make it a great home (maybe just a little paint). So, I think that’ll be my course of action.

(As I explained to my parents in an e-mail I sent them last night, “Let’s say I did buy this place, and then got out a home equity loan to repay you … what would prevent me from them going up to the dealership and buying a 2007 Wrangler? Nothing!”)

And for those of you not in the know — yesterday was my first time at Molly’s Pub in several months, and I was surprised (excellently so) to learn that Molly’s Pub is now one of the few Baltimore bars serving Resurrection Ale. That’s right - it’s not just at Brewer’s Art anymore!
