Don’t know if you saw, but TVShowsonDVD.com was approached by Warner Bros. Home Video for the site’s audience’s preference for covers for the upcoming The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr., DVD box set.

I like this one:

I laughed. I did. Word verification clearly loves me, even if it can’t spell for shit.

Jarhead’s Weather Man

Two quick film reviews for your enjoyment.

(These aren’t really reviews).

JARHEAD isn’t “Black Hawk Down” for the Marine Corps — don’t throw it in your DVD player expecting two hours of gunfighting. The movie follows Anthony Swafford (Jake Gyllenhaal) as he progresses through the Marine Corps — from basic training, to his first assignment, to training as a scout sniper, to his deployment to Kuwait for the first Gulf War.

It’s a great movie about what drives a Marine (and, really, I think the basic theme applies across service lines) during the long waiting periods before war. Someone said “War is weeks and months of abject boredom interspersed with seconds of intense terror.” Or, well, they said something similar. Thankfully, the movie — despite its two hour length — moves quickly, which can be attributed to a smart screenplay adaption and excellent pacing. The smart supporting cast (look! It’s Caleb from American Gothic, all grown up!), excellent cinematography, and a not-so-obvious message that war — no matter the circumstances — hurts all who are involved and the consequences of being sent to war can never be understood until one has gone.

Bob Turk

See, people used to throw things at David Spritzer (Nick Cage), because he’s The Weather Man. Then David started carrying a bow and a lot of arrows, so people sort of pay him a bit more respect these days.

From the same guy who directed Pirates of the Carribean, it’s a sometimes-not-very touching story of a guy who lost his family, has an opportunity for a great new job, but can’t seem to get people to stop throwing milkshakes at him. Y’know, I saw a biography on Nick Cage a few years ago that said he “only” committed to special, deserving projects — then I look at him in films like Lord of War and Gone in 60 Seconds, and I think, “Who is he kidding? He’s in it for the paycheck.” But then he does films like this, and Adaptation, and I think, “Wow. He can act.”

What is freaky about this film: Michael Caine’s American accent. Do we all sound like that? No wonder the English hate us so much.

Dinosaur Diatomyidae Still Alive in Laos 20 mill yrs after believed extinction!

Okay, well, eleven million years as opposed to twenty and … did I say dinosaur? I meant “rat-squirrel.” If you say “rat-squirrel” really fast it sort of sounds like “dinosaur” (helps if you mumble).
