“It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

Six Feet Under, episode eight of the 2nd season.

Easily my favorite episode of the series to this point (I’ve three episodes to watch before finishing the season), the sons of “Fischer & Sons” deal with the unorthodox funeral of a biker killed en-route to his Santa Clause job, while the entire family remembers the last time they saw Nathanial Sr., what with Christmas being the one year anniversary of his death.

This is, without doubt, the best episode of the series. It’s touching, and funny, and a little sad. While the Fischer family remembers with sadness the last time they saw the clan patriarch before his death, their sadness is contrasted by the bikers, who bring beer to their friend’s funeral to celebrate his life. His wife inadvertently teaches Nate something about how he should be leading his life (he’s recently been diagnosed with a potentially fatal brain condition), and that while her husband may have had a few more years if he’d been more careful, “…would I have loved as much as I did?”

Rock on Biker Santa’s woman. Rock on.
