Musings On The Island

(Spoilers for the Second Season of Lost…)

Doesn’t it seem like the island changes size? Sayed and Charlie ran across and back it in one day last season. Now it seems to take forever to get … anywhere.

What’s with the partial Lord of the Ring inspired foot statue? With the four toes? Bizzare!

Most emotional moment? I know its stupid, but Ruth’s reunion with Bernard. Aw!

Desmond’s awesome. Great that he’s back this season as a regular. Of course, I won’t see any of the third season episodes until they’re released on DVD next year.

I’m sorry, did the polar bears find another group of survivors to munch? Or did they all get together, mumble, “Can’t wear white after labor day…!” and commit mass-bearicide?

“Dad, they make me take tests!” So, are The Others creepy results of Dharma Project genetic experiments? Or theatrical school teachers?

Is it just me, or are there an awful lot of people stranded on this island? I bet that sometime within the next few seasons we come across a group of ancient geriatric Japanese soldiers left over from World War II. Locke will drool over their rusted bayonets and Sawyer’ll get another stash of guns together.

Fucking Michael. I never liked Ana-Lucia or nothin’, don’t care that she’s dead (hoorah!), but then Michael has to go and shoot Hurley’s best shot at lovin’. Double-you-tee-eff, man. (PS - while Michael helps Kate and Hurley dig the graves, is it just me, or does he call Hurley by the actor’s name, Hugo?)

Speaking of Ana-Lucia, christ, what a bitch. And I didn’t even like Shannon.

I, still, really like this show. I need to find someone to tape (DVD?) this show for me so I don’t have to wait another year for it.

I think any candidate who resorts to these stupid phone-call ads (I’ve had six today so far) deserves to lose whatever it is they’re running for. (Alternatively, genital snipping as a deterent would probably work).

If there’s one thing I came away from six years in Catholic School, and six years of Christmas recitals under my belt, it’s a love for one song in particular.

I’m not big on the religious stuff in Battle Hymn of the Republic, but it is a kickass song. Following the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Judy Garland performed the song live on her CBS show. She does a pretty kickass rendition of it, too.

I sung along.

It was the right day for it.

When I think of the last five years in relation to the day, it doesn’t seem like five years. It seems like yesterday.

When I think of it in terms of the other things that’ve happened in my life, it feels considerably longer.

I still remember the moment I realized things were really serious, as in, “You ain’t day-dreaming no more boyo”, and that was when, standing in the University Union at Towson, Catch-22 in my hand, starring at one of the many televisions on carts arranged around the lounge area on the second floor, CNN was on, and a woman screamed “Jesus fucking Christ!” as a plane hit the second tower.

The CNN censors failing to blot out “fucking”, particularly in light of what was going on: wow. (I’m surprised the FCC didn’t fine the shit out of them).

I’m pretty sure that wasn’t live. I’m sure a few moments later when the towers collapsed, that was live. It’s odd how some of the details will never firmly afix to my head. I remember that the radio stations were broadcasting feeds from the tv news networks.
