Adrian Drake’s Thomas E. Dewey Steam Powered Airship

Filed under: Uncategorized — MalSnay @ 4:35 pm

airship

Drake’s write-up, from his website, “The Thomas E. Dewey lives in an alternate history where internal combustion engines were never developed, so Steam is the primary powersource. It is named after Thomas E. Dewey, who won the Presidential Election of 1944, defeating FDR. His push to create a fleet of airborne aircraft carriers led to the development of the airship that bears his name.

It features four large lifting rotors, and two pusher rotors. Eight dual-gun turrets are mounted around the outside of the airship. A harpoon gun is mounted to the roof. She has a crew compliment of 24, and can store 4 Cardinal steam fighters on the hangar deck. The fighters launch out the front of the airship, and land in the rear, between the dual booms.”

While you can argue that the Dewey is ugly — it is! — it’s also a beautiful creation. I love that it has a fully detailed interior, as well as both a launch-deck and a hanger deck. I’ve been looking at the pictures for an hour or so now and keep seeing new details — the hanger even has an emergency net to save fighters that can’t stop in time!

Shakespeare & My Blogroll

Filed under: Uncategorized — MalSnay @ 2:09 pm

My minimester course begins in a few hours. I just got home from work and I’m going to veg out for awhile before showering, changing and running down — I need to get there early so I can pick up my book(s) from the University Store before class. Class runs until close to seven, and I’m hitting the grocery store afterwards (can you say rice cakes and bananas?) with my weight-loss resolution in mind.

I’m planning on updating my blogroll while waiting for class to begin (yay laptops and excellent TU wireless!): I haven’t had much chance to do anything with it since late August, and while I’ve put a few people on there, I’ve got a lot of links to update (sorry, NPR & iPod!), delete, and add. If you want a link, or if I promised you one and haven’t yet, shoot me an e-mail (malnurturedsnay AT gmail DOT com) or leave a comment and I’ll be on ya’ like a horny dude on a prostitute.

who likes pink?

I don’t know why I’m surprised that the Steve Martin “Pink Panther” wasn’t as enjoyable as the Peter Sellers’ series. I should be surprised that I remember anything about the Peter Sellers movies, I think I was like four the last time I saw any of them. Seriously, the high point of the film is Clive Owen as a Double-Oh British agent (admittedly: it has its moments, mostly cheap laughs).

I remember, when I was a kid, thinking that the Pink Panther films featured a character that was actually a, y’know, panther. Who was pink. I forget if the Sellers movies had an opening sequence like the Martin film, which featured an animated pink panther. I found myself wondering what circumstances would give rise to a pink panther: was the cat gay, or just metrosexual?

It’s questions like this that occupy my working hours. Strained, I know.

Where The Lego Magic Happens

Filed under: Uncategorized — MalSnay @ 8:40 am

Today before work I’m running to Target for some plastic storage crates, then Home Depot for a plate to go over the light switch in my large bedroom: flipping it turns off my PC. I’m very excited: after close to a full year of having this room as a large, disorganized, messy closet, I spent enough time this past weekend to move furniture into place, toss things out, dust, clean, and organize, making the larger of my two bedrooms into a fully functioning part of my apartment. I still have some organization to do, and a lot of Lego sorting (which I think I’ll make my in-semester project), but here’s a couple photos of both my Lego workarea and the far well (I think I’m going to have to restart my Zeus project).

Yes, those blue bins in the corner are completely filled with plastic bricks, if you were curious.

For those of you curious, no, Hogwarts was built almost entirely in my living room (I built the very lowest part of the base in the big bedroom), which for six months was infested with thousands of Lego pieces on every surface.
