When I finally got to her door, the woman told me, “I thought you were leaving.”
I chuckled, and explained it was my car’s decision: I’d tried to get out, but parking brake or non, my little Celica had started slipping back down the driveway. That was a lot of fun, tossing the pizza bag quickly onto the passenger seat and guiding the car down the snow-coated driveway until it decided it was far enough. Did I mention the driveway wasn’t particularly steep? Wish I’d made arrangements to get my new tires earlier than this coming Monday
That was when I knew that continuing to drive would be futile and increasingly dangerous. What we got tonight in the Baltimore region was a relatively light dusting. On the main roads, like York and Warren, you wouldn’t even notice it was snowing, it was more like a heavy rain. But the back roads were a different story: the snow accumulated enough to make slow and careful driving the prudent choice, and as I mentioned, once I was sliding down a gently inclinded driveway, I made the decision that enough was enough. It’s one thing to be sliding down a driveway onto a sparesly driven street, but there are a lot of hills around here, and I certainly didn’t want to lose control going down one and strike a tree or another car.
Thankfully, by the time I got back to the store, the few night drivers who hadn’t shown earlier had arrived and I was able to leave. It was, unsurprisingly, a slow night: they were forecasting a lot of snow for yesterday, so everyone went to the supermarkets. When that happens, and everyone has a full pantry and refrigerator, few want to spend more money on food.
I’m as greedy as the next guy, but at some point, you have to make a determination as to how much a tip is worth to you. Sure, a $5 tip is great, but, y’know, shelling out deductibles for health and car insurance has to be weighed against that. I still put in an eight-hour-some day, and got home in time to watch my Netflixed Enterprise disc one (only the first episode, “Broken Bow”) and then I watched Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, which, if you’ve never seen it, you should – it’s incredible.
Now I’m doing laundry and sorting my Legos by color. Yes, I live an exciting life. Don’t you want to be me? (You shouldn’t).
