I've had a similiar experience, except with music.

I will hear a song on the radio (CD, whatever), but I can't figure out what song it is, so my brain starts to build an entirely new tune on top of the 'skeleton' I'm trying to process. I find that if I can ignore my brain long enough, I can 'record' this new song in my head before the verdict comes through. "Aha! That's 'Higher Ground', by Stevie Wonder (or whatever). If I could read or write music, I could have put out whole albums of this weird ethereal stuff by now. The point is, this whole process of forgetting what day it is, or simply not knowing at all, is sort of like being out of 'cell phone range' with your consciousness, no drugs or drink involved. It's nice to be able to take your phone off the hook for a few minutes, by, as the late Douglas Adams often put it, "Throwing yourself at the ground and missing."

It's when I wake up and don't know where I am that I know I slept a little too well.

Yeah, but when you have stuff to do on a certain day, you feel helpless when you forget what day it is, don't you?
