Today was my day “off”

Today was my first day off since September 1st: I relaxed, which is to say, I ran errands to the Giant, the dry-cleaners, and the corner grocer. I finally made it out to the DC Target — my first time in a Target since moving to this city — at the Capitol Heights Metro stop. This was my first — or maybe second — time on the Green Line since moving, and I was shocked by the difference from the Red Line. The cars were all new — and no carpet, to boot! — and the stations were just beautiful: well maintained, additional lighting, even the tunnels were well lit. A marked departure from the dark and gloomy Red Line stations I’m accustomed to (admittedly, Grosvenor-Strathmore, which I’m at ten times a week, is well lit … but it’s also an outdoor station).

I also cleaned my apartment, from top to bottom. The closet is organized, the shelves are dust free. All the dishes are clean. I have stacks of clean laundry folded and put away. I also bought new 400-count sheets this morning, so tonight promises a welcome full night of sleep. They looked khaki in the store, but I think they’re gold. They look very comfortable on the bed and I think I can’t wait to sleep on them.

I’m contemplating moving my futon into the closet. I’ve got a 64-square foot closet in a studio apartment with a total space of 400 square feet. Moving it into the closet would free up a lot of floor space in my living area. I also did some rearrangement of other furniture: I moved my dining room table into the kitchen, and moved a bookcase and love seat and lamp from the foyer into the living area.

The cats are trying to get used to some new kitty litter: my parents picked a couple cases up from Petsmart, but I wasn’t clear on the type I use. Right brand, but I’ve never stocked my litter boxes with crystals. Tippy cried a bit before deciding to brave my now brightly-lit litter box’s interior.

My coworker “D.B.” and I went to the Zoo after work on Thursday, and I was able to see the Big Cats for the first time since moving to DC. Tigers and lions were out, and the striped cats were rather active. Also saw the hippo, and the pandas. The cheetah was rolling around on his back pawing at the sky, and sadly, the leopards were not in their enclosure (they’re beautiful cats, on Asia Trail). I still have yet to make it over to the Bird House or the Aviary (but I see it every day from my living room window). (Note: Cheetahs and leopards are not considered “big cats” by the National Zoo).

I also saw, after the fact, an old man who got run over by a bicyclist at Cathedral and Connecticut Avenues.

It’s late, I know: I just finished watching Outbreak, and thanks to a mid-afternoon nap, I’ll be staying up past my bedtime (many nights, if I haven’t worked at my part time bookstore gig, I’m in bed by 9pm, since I wake up at 5:30am) and am trying to decide between V for Vendetta and Order of the Phoenix for late night movie watching. Perhaps — mayhaps, indeed — the Maltese Falcon.

On my reading list: I’m almost through Fellowship of the Ring, for the first time. The second and third books are up after that, as well as Neal Stephenson’s Anathem, and Ken Follett’s The Pillars of the Earth. I’m saving the latter for a trip to Connecticut the last weekend of September. Reading Fellowship clued me in to a reference in Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which I greatly enjoyed. The work bookclub has chosen David McCullough’s 1776 to discuss in October (odd choice for a reading, non-fiction). I’m getting the urge to re-read the Harry Potter series, but I think I’ll hold off until October for that.

(If you’re planning on buying anything off Amazon, please, do so through this website … I can use the referral fees).

I’m one of two people at work who have begun to wear ties to work. Some people make fun of us, but others participate in “Friday Tie Day.” I’ve actually got about two dozen ties or so, most purchased in my last semester at Towson University. If I understand Facebook right, you can see the photos if I’m your “friend.”
