Mighty D: I do in fact have XP, but it looks like it isn't the most current. Trying to upgrade to service pack 3, but the only DL I can find is for IT pros upgrading multiple computers.

Jason: I actually tried #2, but I have no log out/log in options on this computer, so I think I'm on the admin account? Also, right-clicking the setup executable doesn't provide an admin account. (Also, I think if there was an admin account, I'd've forgotten the PW).

I think there's a way you can put songs on the iPod using Windows Explorer, but I don't know the procedure... Try these forums, for starters...

The issue is the privileges you have on the machine. From the looks of it, you do not have Administrator rights on the machine. That seems odd, however, given how normal installs of Windows are done from OEMs like Dell, HP, etc.

You have two options:
1.) Right-click the setup executable, select Run As..., then select your Administrator account and supply its password.

2.) Log in as Administrator, then run the installer.

Alas! Songbird does not recognize "the file system" on my iPod, and suggests I use iTunes to reformat it ... bringing me back to my first problem. Grr.

I would try Songbird. It seems like good stuff, and seems to have support for iPods. ^_^
