@ Telemon. No. You can see part of Karla in the flashback scene toward the end of the movie. He is supervising the hit on Jim and is sitting inside the cafe. You can tell it's him because he has George's lighter. The silent wrong on the window blocks his face in close ups and the fat man blocks him completely in wide shots.

Great movie and a fantastic blog MalSnay!

Cerebral movies are such a joy but couldn't Alfredson thrown us, the audience, a subtle visual clue to decipher when we were being shown scenes from the past? Or was it intentional to mimic Smiley's thought process on ferreting the mole? I did think the red socks Haydon wore was a bit blatant in terms of the plot but it works on so many levels; Ann was also wearing red at the party. A second movie would be greatly enjoyed.

Btw, did anyone else notice that when Boris is caught by Irina he''s buck naked and then suddenly has his clothes on after slamming Irina's head into the window?

At exactly what point in the movie did Smiley know that Hayden was the mole, and how did he know it?

Toward the end of the movie, Smiley visits Haydon. En route, he walks through a gate. A short, severe looking man walks past him. Was that Alleline? He looked too trollish to be Alleline, and Smiley didn't acknowledge him. Give how Karla likes to closely manage his agents, could this have been Karla, who is described as short and severe?

YES! About a month ago I saw the commercial with Idle Time books in it and loved it.
I could't find it on youtube to post it to facebook, but none-the-less, it still made me want to support local businesses.

When I lived in Austin I loved their "Keep Austin Weird" slogan. I wish we had more of a push for local businesses here in DC. Maybe this Amex campaign will help with that?
I hope so.

I google too, and suffer popcorn footitis as well, these made me laugh! glad to know I'm not alone! however to the person saying they read it was "too much dairy in the diet" I eat very little dairy as I am allergic to milk, so I would have to say that is wrong. Mine randomly smell like popcorn. flip flops don't usually make them smell like that, for obvious reasons, but sometimes they actully still do! mainly tennis shoes (only one pair which I hardly wear anymore, and I only started noticing the smell AFTER I washed them in my washing machine.) & my boots if it's hot outside.

just re-watched the movie- (with Gary Oldman) and i dont know why i am so intrigued with this question of why prideaux killed haydon .

i can only think of three possibilities:

1. he did it on his own. As an act of vengence
for the betrayal. Professionally and personally betrayed. prideaux acted on his own - rogue action.

I find this to be the least likely. In fact, I think it is highly unlikely, given that Haydon was to be traded for british agents. This act would have been reckless and treason.

2. that he was acting on orders from Smiley. this seems possible, given that Smiley was running the show now and it seems more likely that haydon going back to russia would further compromise
british intelligience and potentially cause more damage. Smiley admits that the agents that they would be getting back would not be able to work
anymore... at all. Smiley talking to Haydon about
going back would put haydon at some ease , enough to glean a little info.

3. that Prideaux was infact, a double agent just like haydon . They were inseperable, made agood team etc. Karla might want haydon dead to limit any further interrogation. In the mini series, there was mention of the last meeting being arranged by secret note. (haydon was killed by karate chop in the miniseries with Haydon knowing full well that it was Prideaux he was meeting.)

my conclusion is that number 2. that the killing was sanctioned by smiley.

Just finished the mini-series and enjoyed it very much.

Re: Prideaux at the end, seemed more like it was a rogue act when he killed Haydon. Still hard for me to imagine that Prideaux took such an action. The fact that Haydon was to be traded for British agents makes it hard to understand why he would kill Haydon and thereby ruin the opportunity to have them return.

Could it be that Prideaux is a double also?
A lot was made of Haydon and Prideaux being a team. Also, his mission ' testify' resulted in the dismantling of all operatves and led to the re-invention of the circus.
