Christian Tolerance = Good, Except Now

Via Talking Points Memo comes this rather disturbing story.

So it seems like a church is trying to promote itself as being “open” and “non judgemental” and welcoming of “…all people, regardless of ability, age, race, economic circumstance or sexual orientation.”

This must be such a horrid thought to people! Christians who aren’t being assholes and trying to force their beliefs on people? Nay! Although it does explain why CBS and UPN and NBC are being pussy bitches, and refusing to air the commerical because “[it] touches on the exclusion of gay couples and other minority groups by other individuals and organizations,” reads an explanation from CBS, “and the fact the Executive Branch has recently proposed a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a union between a man and a woman, this spot is unacceptable for broadcast on the [CBS and UPN] networks.”

And I say, all the more reason why it SHOULD be aired! We have serious problems in this country, problems of discrimination against homosexuals, and problems of an attempted takeover by the Religious Right. As we see what fundementalist religion has done to the middle east, let us remember that such horrid acts are not isolated to Islam — any time when a religion has such sway, the people under it suffer.

This is a fight for the very soul of America. And I doubt Jesus Christ would be on the side of those championing intolerance, hatred, bigotry, and censorship. The fight is so well defined, even many Republicans and conservatives are aligning against it. This is a fight we dare not lose.

And when I say “we”, I don’t mean liberals or leftists. I mean Americans who cherish the basic promise of the country – freedom for all, without regard to those factors which make us different from one another. Freedom for speech, for thought, for religion.
