DVICE (formerly SciFi.com’s tech blog) knocks Battlestar Galactica for being so decidedly low-tech. Yes, but that’s one of the reasons why I love the show so much: since the technology, for the most part (excluding the, y’know, FTL engines), is so decidedly unmagical, the show tends to ignore the cheap outs and deus ex machinas of other sci-fi shows (unlike the detested Star Trek Voyager whose crew couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag without a tricorder).

  1. When I’m in Gas Control at work, talking to guys out in the field, I hold my phone upside down now like Apollo did in Razor.

Yes, I am that cool. Hah.

  2. Go with what works best, not with what looks coolest. On the other hand, I’d love to have one of those old WWII field telephones gutted, hacked and refit with a quad band telephone. Imagine the looks you’d get when your phone rang, and you hauled that monster out of your bag. You could call in an airstrike with it! Retro-rotary and push button phones are making a HUGE comeback. There’s nothing like having a Red Phone on your desk to show the world that ‘you’ and ‘action’ go hand in hand. “Yes, commissioner.”
